Chiropractic and Pilates – a match made in heaven

When it comes to supporting your spine your core has a direct link. Chiropractic and pilates are for sure the perfect couple and I have been on both sides of the coin to assure you of this.

After the birth of my second child I had a moment where I wanted to get back into moving and loose all my baby weight immediately. So I borrowed my friends double baby pram and loaded up my toddler and newborn and went for an hours walk. Upon getting home I went to load the pram into the boot of my car to return it to my friend and BAM my back went on me. Just like that I did a lumbar disc injury and was in excruciating pain. Not surprising really I had just given birth a few weeks ago, walked for over an hour pushing two kids and then lifted a heavy object. Chiropractic care was my first go to because I am a chiro and it was helping a little bit but I knew that I really needed to rehabilitate my core muscles.

“You are only as young as your spine is flexible.”

Joseph Pilates

So what are core muscles, core strength and pilates?

I’m glad you asked.

There is a direct link between spinal health and core strength, but first let’s dive into what the core actually is.

The core muscles comprise of the:  rectus abdominis, the transverse abdominals, the obliques, the low back extensors, and the glute muscles. When working correctly they can stabilise the lower back, provide strength with lifting and flexibility with movement of the hips and lower spine.

Pilates is a system of exercises that focuses on building strength from the core muscles first. It places emphasis on working around what is called “neutral spinal alignment,” basically meaning that the anatomical correct alignment of the spine is the main focus on where strength is developed. The awareness of these muscles and how to use them during movement in particular helps prevent injury and create stability which reduces loads that cause pain.

Enter chiropractic care and the best couple going around town…

Chiropractic and Pilates!

Chiropractic care especially with the techniques used at Ohana chiropractic and wellbeing in North Lakes is primarily based on creating a level and balanced pelvis. The pelvis is the ‘framework’ of bones that the spine stems from. Once you have a nice balanced pelvis the nerves from the lower back can communicate properly to your lower limbs (and abdominal organs). Add in some pilates to help strengthen and control movement of the spine and pelvis and hey presto you have yourself one awesome lower back that is pain free and strong.

The added bonus is once you are pain free, holding yourself upright and moving well you exude confidence and live your best life because we all know when we are in pain we are cranky and not being our best selves.

So the magic recipe for being strong, flexible, and feeling young and able, living a full life is chiropractic and pilates.

And yes after 6 months of regular pilates and chiropractic care I had completely healed my disc injury, was toned, strong and feeling fab. Then life happened and I fell out of the routine. I do remember how amazing it felt though and that is why I have committed to the 90 day challenge at Club Pilates North Lakes. I look forward to seeing some familiar faces and sharing the journey. May the core strength be strong in you all.
